Everyone deserves a little something extra for putting out extraordinary effort. That includes the professionals tasked with helping you move into a new home or apartment. But knowing when and how to reward good movers for their services remains a bit of a challenge. Here are a few tips that can help you find the right answers.

Tipping is Optional

One misconception that people often have is that they are obligated to tip their movers. While it’s always a good idea to reward movers with something extra for a job well done, you are not required to tip. The decision to do so should always be based on how well the movers perform their tasks. This creates a very good incentive for the movers to excel at their duties.

Any moving company worth its weight will not force customers to provide a tip. If you encounter one that does, you might want to consider another company to handle your moving needs.

There’s No Set Percentage for Tips

Unlike restaurant gratuities, which are usually set at the customary 20 percent of the bill, there’s usually no set percentage for tips. That generally leaves the tip amount in your hands, so it’s up to you how much you want to tip your movers.

In a recent iTipping.com study, researchers found that the industry standard for tipping was five percent of the total bill. For a local move totaling $500, that means a crew of two can expect and share a tip of $25, or $12.50 per person.

If you choose to tip, the amount you do offer should vary based on whether or not the movers impressed you with their service and care. If your mover performed above and beyond what was necessary, you might be generous enough to tick in a few extra dollars. Subpar or unprofessional movers should always come up empty-handed when it comes time to tip.

What about a Good Substitute?

In many cases, customers opt to forgo monetary tips in favor of other interesting and refreshing perks during or after the move. This usually ranges from a quick snack and an ice-cold drink to a hearty lunch or dinner. Some customers may even give away old appliances and furniture they don’t need anymore.

Although most movers do appreciate the great food and free stuff, they tend to appreciate the extra cash even more. When it comes to tipping, local moving companies consider cash as king.
